Our Story - Year Twelve

After Year Eleven, our routine was firmly established.  Maybe a little too much so.

Cameron was in 2nd grade, Parker was in Kindergarten and Anna and Landon were home with me still.  I had been working at the church for about 3 years and finally just couldn't take the stress of that job anymore and had quit back in September and in November (just after our 11th anniversary) I started watching twin babies at our home while their mommy worked during the day.  Taking care of two little babies, a one year old and a 3 year old proved to be pretty stressful too but the twins were only here a couple times a week and, in February, their parents ended up finding someone to watch them at their own home so it had only lasted three months.

About this time I started to feel like I was in a rut or "a funk".  Slightly depressed.  I even wrote several posts about feeling that way.  It lasted on and off for about 4 months and then just kind of dissipated once I acknowledged it.  I was just having trouble feeling motivated to do anything and kind of restless. I can't put my finger on when it went away or why it did but, eventually, I just kind of snapped out of it.  Hormones?  Perhaps.  It was about that time that I felt a lump in my right breast and couldn't get an appointment to see my doctor for several weeks.  I didn't insist on being seen right away because there is no history of breast cancer in my family so I wasn't in any big hurry to get it checked on.  And by the time I was seen by my doctor (4 weeks later) it had shrunk to hardly anything at all.  Turns out that a similar thing had happened to both my mom and my aunt about a year after each of them had stopped breastfeeding and it had been a year since I had breastfed Landon.  I think my body was just getting used to the idea that it wasn't a baby making machine anymore and was making some adjustments.  ; )

It seemed like we were going and doing something all the time and I was disorganized and kind of scatterbrained most of that school year.  I was always rushing out the door at the last minute and feeling like I was forgetting something all the time.  I blame facebook since that was the year I got on the silly thing.  Or, more accurately, I blame my addiction to facebook!   I've definitely had to scale back on how involved I had gotten in it and had to acknowledge that it was sucking up a lot of my precious time.  There are still days that I spend entirely too much time in front of the crazy computer screen and I have to remind myself to get up before I start growing moss!

I was looking forward to a lazy summer that year and it was wonderful to leave the school routine behind and just relax.  No schedules, no soccer practice, no homework, no special events.  Just playtime.  And that summer Brian and I got to go to some incredible concerts and were spending a lot of time dating each other again.  It was very therapeutic!  "Music soothes the savage beast" after all!

In August I took on a new role!  I had become Aunt Rebekah thanks to the arrival of a sweet little someone!

In the fall, Cameron started 3rd grade, Parker started 1st grade, Anna started going to preschool and I had just my (2 year old ) "baby" home with me.  We went on an AMAZING vacation, in September, to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and were gone while our town was being flooded.  We live on such a steep hill that we weren't worried about our house but we had many friends that had damage to their homes during the deluge.  Knowing that it was soggy and dark at home, we thoroughly enjoyed all the sun and surf we were surrounded by.

All of that rest and relaxation and doing things I love had helped me to see things differently.  I was noticing how beautiful my life is.  I was observing how lovely each day was on its own and how blessed I was just to have these gorgeous people in my life.  The routine wasn't bothering me anymore because I was finding that order and structure are not my enemies if I learn to work with them.  Is this the year I "grew up"?  Maybe a little.

A more "grown up" me, a more comfortable me, a more relaxed me celebrated twelve years with her sweetheart that November.
What did I/we learn during our twelfth year?:
  • Babies (plural) are Tough! - Taking care of a room full of wailing 18 month olds or caring for a set of twins is NOT the same as taking care of your own children and is not for the faint of heart.
  • Don't Consult the Internet Before You Talk to Your Doctor - During the four weeks I had to wait to be seen for the "lump", I had worked myself into a minor hysteria by reading about breast cancer and tumors and how approximately "70% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer" but  I had read it wrong and thought that it meant that 70% of the women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history when it was actually talking about the TYPES of breast cancer and not the women.
  • Facebook is Good in Small Doses - It is a wonderful tool for reconnecting and keeping up with friends but if it's taking up more than an hour of your day then it's time to cut back.
  • Stop and Smell the Roses - When your schedule has you bogged down and feeling blah then take a break or think about what it is you love to do and then DO it!
  • Grow Up - Being a mom means having to deal with schedules and homework and practices and stuff.  Help yourself by getting organized.

FORTY! - Part 1

My sweetheart is now 40 years young!   He is even more amazing now than when we met 14 years ago!

When I asked him if he would rather have a party or go out of town to celebrate, he didn't hesitate to say he'd rather go out of town.  The plan was for just the two of us to go to Tybee Island for a few days but about a week ago he decided to surprise the kids and take them with us.  We had such a good time!  I'm so glad he changed our plans because we won't get a big family vacation in the fall since I will be on the equator that week and Mom will be taking Anna to Disney World.

This is how our weekend started:  The usual traffic jam at the 75 South/675 merge.  Warning to anyone coming through Atlanta:  you will most assuredly sit in traffic on this 2 mile stretch of highway.  It does not matter what day or what time.  If there is an accident that is actually blocking one or more lanes you can increase your trip time by at least 45 minutes.  If there is no accident, no stall or nothing whatsoever to explain why traffic might be slowed you just need to add an extra 10 or 15 minutes to your ETA.  I found it highly entertaining and ironic that the car in front of us had the word "Remember" on the back window.  I do not miss this aspect of living in Henry County AT  ALL.

The Shell House is a mandatory stop.  Unless you're allergic to fish.  Then, by all means, keep driving.  Otherwise, don't eat before you go and plan on smelling of crab legs for the next 24 hours!  Mmmmm...

We got to Tybee late Friday evening but we had to get in some quick beach time before bed.

Ketchup

It seems that over the last few weeks I've just been playin' "catch-up" on this here blog. A couple of days ago I was kind of lecturing myself about it too. But today I'm in a better place about the whole thing.

Part of the issue has been that I simply must have absolute quiet in order to think about which words I should use in order to form complete and coherent sentences. And I have had very little uninterrupted quiet lately. Not to mention that the last few weeks have been pretty busy around here and I feel like because I've spent a little less time on the computer or thinking about this here blog that I have not had to play "catch-up" on my everyday kind of things. Is this making a bit of sense? What I mean is: I would rather be behind schedule on the blog than to be behind schedule in life. There. I think that says what I mean.

So, in light of the whole being busy thing, here is a post to get all of you caught up about what's been going on here. If you're interested. Because, believe you me, it isn't terribly interesting. Again, this is another part of the problem because I have this "thing" about the blog being "interesting" and I just need to suck it up and get over it. When I took this job (stay-at-home mommy), I was informed from the get go that it wasn't going to be a glamorous position. You know,... the whole wiping up poo and vomit and laundry and such kind of takes out all the pizzazz. (insert jazz hands!)

Enough rambling...on to the cake!

Brian has demanded requested repeatedly that I make a new dessert for him every Friday. So I finally got around to doing that last week. He was thrilled!

Playdate at Play an Activity Center with one of Anna's little preschool friends. If you haven't been to this place, I highly recommend it. They treat you goooOOOd here!

Look! Their mama was actually there, too! ...
Or is that just their personal photographer?

Before we left that morning I got my shipment from Blue Ribbon Foods.
Wait! I think I hear angels singing... Look at all that glorious food!

And this was our view as we rounded the corner toward home.
I love this view! I think it took me at least 6 months before I started actually watching the road in front of me instead of turning to gaze at the gorgeousness every time we came home. It's a miracle I didn't run over any pets or children at play.

Friday Cuddle Bug's class went on a field trip to Zoo Atlanta. Lots o' fun! Especially since Kristi Walker and I had to keep running off to find one of several of the little monkeys in our group. There was always someone running off ahead or straggling behind.

And I had this little cutie patootie with me!

And, speaking of cutie patooties...
...Cuddle Bug's seventh birthday was today!

These were the cupcakes he requested.

And, by-the-way, Wednesday was my birthday.
So,... Happy Birthday to Me!

And if it hadn't started raining at 6:00 tonight I would have had to herd a bunch of elementary rugrats through an inflatable thing at the kids' school Fall Festival tonight.
Thank you, Lord, for the rain! "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights." - James 1:16

And so ends my post.

Brian's Birthday, Part Deux! Because we love to drag this whole birthday thing out as long as we can around here!

After seeing Rock City we ate at Cheeburger! Cheeburger! (who in the world came up with that name, anyhow?! I'm sure it says on their website so if you really want to know I'm certain you can find out.) Then we walked across the street to the Tennessee Aquarium. We only had enough energy left to visit The Ocean Journey side. The kids wanted to see the sharks and penguins and Brian and I had not been to the TN Aquarium since the second building has been built.

So serious!

I promise I'm not dumping her in!
Her little arms never did reach down far enough to touch any stingrays but she had a blast trying.

Who's GORGEOUS child is that?!
Oh! Mine! All mine!

Lady Bug with a butterfly

I hope that butterfly doesn't think that's a cave to fly into!
Sorry, I can't help myself! "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!"

Um, yeah, my camera decided it was too tired to focus any longer.

After today, I'm kind of wishing I had one of these tank things to put them in (Lady Bug mostly) to muffle ALL. THE. WORDS. COMING. OUT. OF. HER. MOUTH. She's still talking, singing actually, even though I've put her to bed twice and she spent about an hour in the pool and a good 40 minutes in the tub tonight. Oh my gosh! at the energy!

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart! part 1

For Brian's 39th birthday we took a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee. We visited Rock City and the Tennessee Aquarium. I wondered if the kids would have enough stamina to make it to both places without any meltdowns. I didn't need to worry about that at all; they did great! The weather was beautiful and there were not too many people at either place. The only disappointment of the day was that our favorite restaurant, The Pickle Barrel, changed to an "Age 21 and older" establishment because smoking is allowed inside.

Look at Lady Bug ready to climb over the edge!

Taking a break while a quick rain shower passes by and while I run down to the store to get more batteries for the camera.

What a gorgeous place!
